Nerite snail question

I know this may sound dumb but......when I look into a snail shell, what should I see?

I bought a nerite snail and when I got home I noticed I could not see anthing in the shell. Do they pull way back into the shell or is it empty. I've never owned a snail before so I'm not sure what to look for.

Thanks for any help guys!

They can pull themselves pretty deep into their shells but you will always be able to see their body, it usually looks glossy.

Be a master of water and the fish will follow
