Help me save my snails!

I have been keeping a snail in each tank...I know they poop a lot - the "Betta Baster" really helps suck that stuff out of the gravel...anyway...

I have had two die, and it seemed like their shells had really thinned out from when I purchased them. Is there something I need to be giving them to keep the shells healthy and growing? I can't find it now, but for instance, I thought I remembered reading someone would put a bird cuttlebone piece in the tank for them to help with shell health.

My kids love their snails, and I love that they eat my algae. I want to replace the one that died, but I want to try to make sure this one doesn't make for a hat trick of dead snails!

I've had my two nerite snails for 1 month now. I have had 1/2 of a cuttle bone (like the things for birds). They last a really long time and I just buried it in the gravel. Mine are picky and only like fish food & algae wafers- they won't eat their veggies!

Right, if the shells have gotten thinner then that probably means you have very soft water that is deficient in the necessary minerals (like my water). All the above suggestions will help to keep their shells strong.

Do double check the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels though. Those can be just as toxic to them as they are to fish.

Some people put calcium supplement pills (like for humans) in the tank for their snails, too.

Thank you for the suggestions! I let my daughter pick her new snail last night, and I'll be picking up a cuttle and some spinach for it and the other two this weekend.

I'll look into getting a master kit to test the water.
