Care of Ghost shrimp

Hey guys so I've been thinking about adding some ghost shrimp to my five gallon betta tank and had a few questions.

1. Should I aclimate the shrimp before I put them in the tank?I've seen a lot of dead ones in the pet store tanks, could the give my betta deases?

2. Can ghost shrimp harm bettas?

3.What would I feed them?

4. How many should I get for a five gallon or is that too small?

If you guys have any other tips or advice I'd love to hear. Thanks!

Ghost shrimp can harm bettas, I've witnessed it. Go with red cherry shrimp. They should be cheap and they breed easily, so it won't matter if your betta snacks on them. Yes, acclimate them like you would a fish, they eat leftover food, algae (for the RCS), and microscopic organisms. For a 5g with a betta, you could only get about 3-5 ghost shrimp. You can easily put 10 RCS in that tank along with the betta. I'd say RCS is the way to go. They're fun to watch, colorful, and they are very interesting creatures.

I strongly agree with Kiara! My ghost shrimp attacked my betta.

But if you do get them, here are my responses.

1. Yes, I would acclimate the shrimp by floating the bag in the tank just for 10/15 minutes

2. Yes, they can. Rip shreds of their fins.

3. Bloodworms, they would eat my betta flakes, pretty much everything.
One even ate my algae wafers.

4. I had 2, but you can go with 3.

I have a 5gal fluval spec V and have 2 African Dwarf Frogs and 1 betta. They get along perfectly. However, my betta is super unaggressive and never flares at them or anything. So my betta doesn't bother them at all. My betta will even share food with them :)

I'd recommend 1 or 2 frogs over the shrimp. Just be really careful about the water conditions since froggies are sensitive to it.

What type of tank do you have

My ADFs lived in a 10g with a male betta and RCS. Everyone lived in there happily for 3 years. :)

I love adfs. They are just so cute and adorable, mine are still shy and hiding, how long did it take yours to get over that?

Lol for some silly reason I thought rcs mean red cardinals and I was like "you keep birds in your tank?!?!/" pfft.
Red cherry shrimps, Mar, duh

Haha, wow! Well, red cardinals are my state bird. ;)

Still, it took them a few months. I hand feed them, along with hand feeding my betta and hand feeding the shrimp little shrimp pellets. They way they swarm on my hand is the funniest thing ever! :D

Oooh, I think like six states have the cardinal. I'm guessing Illinois since I used to live there :p
How did you hand feed the ADFs? Did u just hold the food in your hand and follow them around? Cause mine always run and hide under something :(

Sorry we're so off topic!

Agreed, sorry!

Still, I started with tweezers. Then, seeing as how I'm ALWAYS around my tanks, they're used to seeing me. I tend to stick my hands in the tanks a lot too. lol *guilty* Still, they just got used to me.
