Question Other Fish With Male Betta

Hi! I'm asking this question for my friend, she has a male betta in a 3 gallon tank and was trying to figure out if she should get him any companions or not. So I thought I'd ask on here for her what types of fish are compatible with a male betta and how many could possibly go in the tank? Thank you for your help!

In a 3g, her only choice is a snail, possibly a shrimp. In a tank that size, I'd recommend lots of hidey holes or the betta might be tempted to harrass the newcomer. 10g is the minimum size before other fish can be added.

Went with my friend and the store owner just recommended one fish using the inch/gallon rule. So she went back home with a Gourami (may have been a dwarf one, I really don't remember, I was just blown away by the good conditions of the bettas in the cups and the ones in community tanks with other species of fish like tetras, gouramis, etc.)

The 1 gallon per inch is a really bad rule.. It really only works on 50G+. The betta and gourami are part of the same family, they'll fight soon enough. I think you should just return it and then get 2-3 shrimp or a nerite snail.

Over hundreds of bettas die in their small, dirty cups each day. Only you can help them live. Research and then save them, today!

I'll inform my friend about what you've all said.

I shouldn't be surprised by this, but that is crazy that the store owner would suggest a dwarf gourami because:
1. it will fight with the betta.
2. they get much larger than one inch.
3. minimum tank size for a dwarf gourami is 10 gallons,
