Neons or no?

I keep hearing mixed messages on Neon Tetras... I hear from some people that they are great with Bettas and other people have said that the Neons have harassed the Bettas because Bettas have long fins are don't swim as quickly as the tetras... so which is it? Or does it just depend on the fish themselves?

It does depend on the fish, there is some info on www.squidoo.com/tankmates

In my big tank, I have a sorority of 12 girls, and they seem to be fine with the 7 tetras I have. There are 4 neons and 3 glowlines. One of my girls actually seems to think she is a tetra, she is always hanging out with them!

I put seven neons in with my male betta, and he killed (and ate) them all in two days. I seriously thought he was going to die...

Oh my... it seems I may have to do some fishie personality testing before adding in any tankmates! I certainly wouldn't want to add fish or even shrimp only for him to eat them! O.o

I've had enough males kill neons that I won't try it again.

I have had 3 males with neons with no problems at all. Except some Petco neons I got all died within a week and the betta almost died too!

The next set of neons I got is from a LFS and they are extremely healthy, except one did jump out the small space in the back of the light hood.

I had 7 neons in with my 11 girls at the time in my 33 and everyone was fine, no nipping whatsoever but I found that the neons were getting rowdy within their group, constantly sparring and it was really stressing my girls out. So I took the neons out and the girls were much happier.

But yeah, definitely depends on the fish, all my shorter finned boys would kill smaller fish, been there done that and won't do it again lol

Are all tetras pretty much the same... I mean the ones that all look similar? I know cardinal tetras are more delicate than neons but I don't know enough about the other types of tetras...
