Tell me all about...

ADFs! For those of you who keep them, I've been doing a bit of research. It would be great if you could correct any wrong info I have and share some of your advice or experiences with them. Namely, what sort of problems have you run across keeping them with bettas, if any?

Here's what i have so far:
  • Need at least 1/1.5 gallons each.
  • Prefer to be in pairs.
  • Need a temperature in the mid 70's.
  • Must have a hood, as they can jump out of the water.
  • The current of the filter shouldn't be too strong.
  • Feeding them freeze dried food is okay. They should be fed with tools such as tweezers or a turkey baster as they are not very good hunters.
I have a 5 gal that my HM is going into. I'm planning on buying two frogs for it. First I will need one of those expansion cords so I can fit his filter in, and cycle it. Then i will go get the frogs.

Sounds good!! I've thought about getting ADFs before, but I've heard of so many people having trouble feeding them.

If you put the food directly in front of the frog, he should be able to eat it.

Thanks Dramaqueen! This sheet says at least 5 gallons though...hm...

Oh! There was something I wanted to ask. How are they with aquarium salt? Because I put a bit of salt in all of my tanks...

Also, I got a Tetra filter that's meant for 1-3 gallons so that my boy doesn't get knocked around too much. With 2 frogs, would I need a better filter?

They are fine with salt. Just no too much.

I go according to the directions on the box, 1 tbsp in 5 gallons. Are they fine with that?

I have an ADF with my betta and they get along just fine; there's no aggression either way. Feeding can be cumbersome, but the frog will learn -- mine now stretches toward the turkey baster for his bloodworms. I recommend separation during feeding, however; Kroenen (betta) will steal Johann's food (and/or accidentally nip him) if I am not careful.

It depends on the betta's personality whether or not he'll accept an ADF or any tankmate.

Oh, that's true as well. Hopefully Dmitri can play nice, because I've always wanted these little guys. I suppose I could always put them in the 10 gal if he doesn't like them.

Jessiefish, mind telling me how big your tank is?
