The betta can prolly go through the middle though, and that wouldn't protect the shrimp then. Smaller ones the betta won't be able to travel through and the shrimp will have a cozy place to run to then.

You can have up to 1 shrimp per gallon. If your betta's particularly aggressive, I'd go with ghost shrimp instead since they're harder to see. Make sure they have plenty of hiding spots! Also, a bunch of them will probably die off really quickly due to being kept in awful conditions beforehand and not because of your betta.

no I was gonna go for the cherry shrimp only because I found a good seller. On the upside my petco now sells grey speckled ADFs, so I'll consider that. They also have a huge bamboo shrimp

Bamboo shrimp feed off of filters so if you want one, make sure it has a place to sit next to your filter and that the current is relatively strong (which might not be the best idea because of your betta).
