5 Gallon Tankmates Question

Hello.

I picked up a 5 gallon tank, filter and all at the flea market last weekend for 3$. It is a hexagon tank. I'm planning to put one of my male betta fish in this tank. However, my question is - what kind of tankmate (if any) would be suitable for a 5 gallon tank? I've read about different shrimp and snails but I guess I'd like to know is a 5 gallon big enough for tankmates for my male betta and if anyone else has had good experiences with tankmates in a 5 gallon tank. Of course I will do what is in the best interest for my betta and leave him in there alone if that is a better decision. I currently have 5 male betta's total and they are all happy in their own 2.5 gallon+ tank. The betta I'm considering upgrading into this 5 gallon tank is shy and playful but not too aggressive like some of my other males. I'm just nervous that since he is a HM, other fish might nip at his fins.

My boys: Augustus (VT), Bernie (CT), Cosmo (SDeT), Dollop (HM), & Kirby (CT)

No other fish can go in a 5 gallon.

You could probably do a snail or a couple of shrimp.

My split 10 gallon (for two bettas, so 5 gallons each) will not have any other tank mates. I personally don't think tank mates are a good idea for a tank that's 5 gallons or smaller.

Thanks. What kind of snail or shrimp should I get if I decide to go that route?

You could put some endlers or embers in the 5 with him. I wouldnt do any snails. But you could do cherries, amanos, ghosts, and/or whiskers.

Nerite snails are fine in that tank. So are shrimp or maybe one African Dwarf Frog.

A nerite would be great. A mystery snail would probably work too, as long as the tank is cycled. I personally prefer mystery snails. They have a lot more presence in a tank than nerites.

An ADF or shrimp sounds great! Just keep in mind some bettas do eat cherry shrimp! I would start out with 5 shrimp for that tank.
