I did some research on otos before I bought these and in most of the articles I read they're referred to as shoaling fish, though I think that's a somewhat general term.

What I've noticed is they do hang out together, usually a pair, occasionally all three. When they're not working that is. They're like little algae vacuum cleaners.

While I don't see a big problem with having just one, they do seem to be happier in numbers. So far all three of mine look okay, so I'm hopeful they all survive.

I've read a few things about them being shoaling too, I wasnt sure whether to get 1 or 3 but think i'll go for 3 =) you know if there isnt enough algae in the tank, what will they eat? or is the algae essential?

Having some algae in the tank to begin with may help them recover from the stress of being transported, and probably being malnourished as well.

I haven't tried other foods yet with mine as I had enough natural algae to keep the busy for a few days. Soon I'm going to try algae wafers and blanched cucumber, and see if they like it.

Another option would be to put a rock in a bucket of water, and place the bucket in the sun. Algae should grow on the rock and form an oto feast. You could probably rotate a few rocks in and out of the tank this way, and keep them fed indefinitely.
