Added Otos

I went ahead and added three little otos to my tank today, so we'll see how they make out. The male betta who firmly believes he owns the tank was a little perturbed when I added them, but he's simmered down now and seems ready to accept them as long as they don't get uppity.

The question in my mind is whether the little guys will make it. They seem active and healthy, but apparently they're pretty fragile and don't have a real good survival rate when first added. Time will tell.

This is true, but once theyve been in your tank for a little while they seem to do pretty well. I had bought 3 and on the first day I lost one already and within a few days I lost another but the third one Ive had for around 2 months now and hes doing just fine. I plan on getting a few more. What size tank do you have?

They're in a 7 gallon tank, with a betta whose nose is a little out of joint but who's adapting pretty well to his new buddies. I was originally planning on only adding 2 otos, but figured with their low survival rate I'd toss in an extra. So far all 3 seem happy and healthy.

The tank had enough algae that they're keeping busy, and if they were starved, they should have a decent chance at recovery. Right now they seem to think it's buffet time.

My wife wants me to set up a second tank. If I do, I'm thinking of a 16 gallon. One or two of the otos could eventually end up in that one. For the moment, I need to watch the numbers on my water and make sure the tank can handle the 4 fish.

Nice. Seems like youve got it under control. I hope those Otos stay happy and healthy for you.

I added 3 otos a little over a week ago, and at feeding time today I found one dead and stuck to the filter :(

That's sad.

I figure if mine make it to the three week mark, they'll probably be okay. They sure are active little guys.

Are otos shoaling fish or can they just live on their own?
