two female bettas fighting

Okay so I have had two female betta fish for about 3 months, they have always seemed to get along and everything until about and hour ago I noticed that one of them was picking at the other one. The one fish would attack the other and liplock and like swim around ferociously. I just separated them and my dad went out to buy a new tank but I'm not really sure what would be best?

You could get a ten gallon tank and maybe start a sorority. That would spread out the aggression a bit. Or you could just seperate them like you are.. but I wouldn't put them back together unless you are start a sorority. I haven't had any experience in sororities though, that is just my opinion.

You should never house two females together. As in any aggressive species, if your going to house them together you need many to spread the aggression around. To start a sorority you need at least 4 females, 6 or more is much better though.

You also need to provide lots of plant cover and hiding spots so each girl can establish her own territory.

I have four and they get along fine, if I didn't know what type of fish they were I would swear they were supposed to be shoaling fish, they are always swimming around together lol. I'm planning to get some more soon =) Rather than separate them you could buy some more plants, hiding places and just add two or three more females =)
