Acclimating shrimp and betta is hunting them! HELP

I just bought three cherry shrimp. They are currently acclimating to the tank where I already have a betta. They are in a bag, but my betta is "hunting" them and trying to eat them from outside the bag. I will be taking him out before I release the shrimp, but I don't want them to get eaten once I put him back. Is this normal? Should I not put them in?

The sooner the answer the better, please!

I recently added ghost shrimp to my betta's 10 gallon. At first, he followed them around the tank, and I thought he was going to try to eat them (some are very small). A week later he ignores them. Only interest is if I drop in a piece of algae wafer and he thinks he may be missing out on food. I think it helps if they have plenty of plants and hiding places during the adjustment. They aren't dumb, if the betta comes around they either freeze (seems he can't see them when they do that) or move under something.

Thank you. I am almost ready to add him back in so I am glad they will be smarter than him.
