Livebearers?

(Mods please feel free to move this thread if its not in the right forum category.) Does anyone know if I can keep 1 male swordtail with a bunch of female platys?

Thats really not a good idea. Also, if your thinking that 'ooh maybe they'll breed' I will let you know now that they wont. They are too different too breed. Like trying to breed Mollies with Guppies, just doesn't work.

I'm going to have to disagree with the above post. Platies and swordtails can and will breed. I have personally seen the results of such crosses. I don't know why you would want to try this, but it is definitely possible.

No, no. Of course I don't want to crossbreed. I just want to have some platys and swordtails in my tank without overstocking! My 40gal is already going to be around 80% stocked by the time I'm ready to get them, so how do I put in an amount of both without overstocking? And are they even compatible? And if you're going to tell me its not a good idea, please tell me WHY! Don't just randomly answer to a thread without explaining. Its not nice.

You can definitely put them together. I would only add a few platies though if your tank is already at 80% capacity. Swordtails need a bit more space than most livebearers as the males tend to be more territorial in my experience.

So, like three (female or male?) platies, and how many swordtails? I would guess maybe one male and two females(I've heard I should have a male-female ratio of 1:2)? or just a female? I was hoping I could keep a few of each and have them school together, without cross breeding. (Who would want to do that? I know it may have sounded like I wanted to, but there are already plenty of species of both to choose from.)

I would say a trio of each. If they have females of their own kind to mate with they shouldn't bother the other ones.
