New 14 gal. tank

So I got a Aquaeon Aquarium Kit yesterday. It included a 50 watt heater, a power filter(I'm not sure what model, the box just claims that it's a quiet power filter), a thermometer, some trial sized food and water conditioner, a hood with two incandescent 15 watt light bulbs, and of course the tank.

I currently have a yellow Delta Betta that I've had since August(I only remember that it was sometime during the beginning of the school year). It's going to be two weeks until I can actually get all the supplies I need(including some Tetra Safe Start or another product like that), so right now I'm just trying to research fish that are compatible with my betta. I was thinking about getting neon tetras, but I don't really like schooling fish since I'm not sure if I have room for an adequate school of tetra. I would like platies, since my mom also really likes those, but I'm just wondering how many I should get, and whether I should get all male or all female platies. I was thinking about cory catfish, too.

I would like to get some inexpensive, easy to maintain live plants, as well so any ideas on substrate? I also plan on getting fake castle decorations and things like that as soon as possible after everything's settled in the tank. Is that a bad idea?

So I would like your ideas on fish and plants to stock the tank with and perhaps decor.

Well, that's good news :) But I'd like platies a lot more.

If you are going to house Platies than you will need to have all females..as they will breed like crazy in mixed sexed groups, and if you house all males they will most likely bully eachother around.

Okay, thanks for the info. If I do get platies I'll be sure to get only females.

Would I be overstocking my tank if I got 6 neon tetras, 2 platies and put my betta in there, too? That was my original stocking plan.

Well, I believe platies like to be kept in groups of 3 or more anyways..

Fred, HM male
Trudy, VT female
Jasper, VT male :)

I'll see how the platies act when I get them. If they seem skittish in only a pair, I'll look into getting another one.

I definitely will add ghost shrimp if they can live off of scraps and waste.

I think I'll stick to my original stocking plans for now, plus an extra platy. AqAvisor says the stocking level would be 88% if I did that.
