Dead snail??

I had a Blue Mystery snail in my 5 gallon tank with Jaws. Well this morning the snail looked kind of funny and when I got home from class this evening it was half hanging out of the shell and Jaws kept trying to eat it. My husband got the net and took it out ( I gag) lol. It was slimy and runny and oozing out of the shell. Does this happen when they die?? Or was something wrong with it?

Eeeuuuwww! I bet that thing stunk to high heaven. I'm sorry, I don't know anything about snails except that they smell REALLY bad when they're dead.

I didn't get close enough to smell it. Lol I stayed in the living room. I don't think I'm going to get another one for his tank, he didn't seem to share space very well with others. My other Betta does fine with his snail though. Silly fish:)

The 2 ways to check if a snail is dead are to;

1) Poke/pull at it. If it retreats into the shell it is alive. If not it is dead
2) Dead snails smell like rotten eggs or something equally as foul. If it stank it was dead. Live snails don't really smell.

It was def dead. It basically fell or dripped out of the shell. He wasn't very active the last few days. Poor thing.

Aww poor thing. Well you can tell by gently pulling on his little trap door. If he pulls back, he is alive. Just saying for if you ever get another one. ;)

I have 1 betta and a mystery snail and lovin every minute of it! Thanks for all the help Bettafish.com!
