I have a 17g tank that I am considering starting a sorority, I've heard from many people more is better, since it spreads out aggression. I was thinking possibly
7-9 females
6 Pygmy cories
Possibly 3 Otos
So, the problem is, this tank is not "heavily planted" it will have a carpet and pretty much bare swimming space along the front, along the back behind some rocks I'll have some talker and bigger plants that will give some coverage. But then again, it definitely won't be breaking up lines of sight 24/7.
Stick with the Betta only, the stress is already big as it is you don't wan't some of them getting mad in the Cories and Otos. I say do the betta first and then once everything is settled try adding the Cory and Oto and see the results.
Floating Anacharis had definetly helped me with my sororities in the past, so I suggest getting some Anacharis and just float them.
You need the tank to be densely planted. You should not be able to see from front to back or side to side at all. Otherwise you're going to have constant chasing, likely ending in injury or death.
I had a sorority a while back and they were okay after I added so many plants they could hardly swim a couple inches straight! I also made them a PVC pipe condo, wasn't pretty, but it did the trick!
I didn't have enough cover in my sorority at first.and one of the girls started chasing everyone else and biting their fins! I loaded it with silk plants, put in a bunch of caves, and some floating logs. Problem solved. I also leave the.water level a couple inches below the filter out flow, mitt creates a bit of a waterfall in the only cleared surface area. If they get to chasing or flaring the downward current pushes them apart and forces them in to the plants and they're so busy getting out they forget what they were doing. The little pea brains, lol. So far so good.

I'm so smitten with the girls. I never realized how much fun they are. One of them tries to chase my hand out the tank when I'm cleaning and rearranging. The little stinker bit me today! Good thing she.doesn't have teeth.
