It doesn't have to be snails, any other tank mates that will help with cleaning the tank will work! I have a 6.5 gallon with plastic plants if that makes a difference
Ah. Is it a new tank or an old tank? Has it been cycled?
I usually recommend Netrite Snails, but they will starve to death in an unplanted tank. Mystery (Apple) Snails get to the size of an apple with the right care, and MTS need sand substrate. Assassian Snails are what RusselTheShihTzu recommends, but they like eating other, small, pest snails & live/frozen bloodworms. Ramshorn & Pond Snails multiply, but only if you overfeed. I'd look into getting a cute little Blue or Pink Ramshorn! They stay small, *usually* don't multiply... IDK. Wait for other people to jump in before you order, this is mostly opinion & bits of reasearch.
FWIW, true Apple Snails can get huge; Mystery Snails the size of a golf ball. They are not the same although there is a lot of confusion because "Apple" is a term loosely used for a variety of snails from the same family.
I prefer Assassin Snails because they are small and will eat leftover food but not plants. They benefit from the occasional frozen Bloodworm but then so do Betta. If you go to live plants they will eliminate the problem of pest snails. I also like Mystery Snails and they do well in tanks of your size.
Is your tank filtered? Do you know if it's cycled? If not, I would wait until it is cycled to get any snails or other critters.
Do you have anything for parameter testing? If not, before I invested in a snail I would get a liquid Ammonia test and API 5-in-1 strips. The API Master Test Kit is best but not everyone has the budget for it. Then I would follow that tutorial and cycle the tank. Some tanks will cycle in a matter of weeks but depending on pH, some can take a couple of months so how long a tank has been set up is never an indication it is cycled.
Follow the tutorial above and cycle your tank; it will make maintenance so much easier. A 6.5 tank, depending on stocking, will only need a 25% water change every week or two. With one snail and one Betta every two weeks.
