10 gallons, two bettas, and tetras?

I recently got a 10G tank, divided it, and have two male bettas in it. I'm in the process of planting it, and I may need to add a new hide or two (one on each side currently). I have a mix of gravel and glass pebbles for substrate, one filter, and two airstones (because they both love bubbles).

I'd really like to put in twelve tetras or other microfiche; six on each side once I have enough cover.

How much cover do I need, and would that be overstocking?

That would be overstocking unfortunately. Tetras need long spaces and you wouldn't be able to fit twelve on top of two bettas already.

The only way you could add the Tetra is to have dividers with holes large enough for them to go through but the Betta not. I have acrylic dividers with .25" holes and the Pygmy Cory, Dario Dario and Ember Tetra and others can use the entire length of the 20 long. IMO, 10" x 12" just wouldn't be enough space for a shoaling species.

Okay, I thought that was probably overstocking. What if I took a betta out and did a community tank with just 6 tetras and a betta?

You could have a nice shoal of Tetra with a single Betta in a 10 gallon...as long, of course, as you have proper filtration. I prefer Ember Tetra as they are far less nippy than Neon Tetra. I would also suggest a Mystery Snail to clean up leftover food. If you had sand substrate or it was bare-bottom you could also have 6-7 Habrosus Cory.

Mom said no snails. I have a filter rated for up to 15 gallons, placed directly in the middle of the tank. Is that adequate? Oh, and 2 airstones. I'll see if I can get the embers and if I like the look of them- after bettas, I'm into fairly decorative fish haha.
