I'm inquiring about what are some good tank mates for a betta in a 4 gallon tank. My parents say that a tank of that size is too big for a single betta and it would be best to have mates. Know any good ones? The tank is filtered, heated, and cycled. (Hes a male VT)
Actually, it's the opposite. 4 gallons is too small for any other fish to live comfortably. Many common fish have needs such as shoaling and schooling. Tetras and corydoras need groups of at least 5 if not more to feel comfortable. Especially if they live with a predator like a Betta fish. Also, since they need the company of others, they do need swimming space which means you'd need a 10 gallon or larger to get other fish.
Honestly, your betta is super happy to be all alone and in such a great tank! If you want, you could add a Mystery snail but let it be known that some Betta will attack the snail relentlessly so do have a back-up plan if he does that! Some betta don't care and there is no way of knowing beforehand unfortunately. But also, Mystery snails will eat some prepared foods, not all snails will, but they poop at on so be prepared you might need an extra water change or two in the first month of having the snail in!
You could also do ghost shrimp but also know that a Betta might eat them too if they don't have enough hiding places. Live or silk plants are the best additions for a Betta so make sure you have plenty of those!
Silk plants! And a few marimo moss balls. I have a betta in a 4g, and I'm amazed that your parents think it's too big. My family has been having a debate over upgrading to a 10g!
As someone who keeps a single betta in a ten gallon, a 4 gallon is a fine size without tank mates!
