So I'm about to set up and start cycling a 10 gallon tank, which I plan to be moderately planted. I want to keep a betta, but I would also like to keep something else in there with him. I have heard mixed views on which fish can fit comfortably in this environment, so these are the ones I'd be interested in. Bushynose, Bristlenose, or Clown Plecos; Panda Cories; Neon Tetras; Zebra Danios; Harlequin Rasboras; Ghost Shrimp; Oto Catfish; White Cloud Minnows; or Nerite Snails. Cories or a small Pleco would be my first pick, but I don't want to cram them into a 10 gallon if they'll be unhappy. Unfortunately my LFS doesn't have and Pygmy Cories, so I probably wouldn't be able to get those.
White Cloud Minnows are coldwater fish and should not be housed with Tropicals. The best temperature for WCM is 10 degrees below the best temperature for Betta. Zebra Danio, IME, are too "zippy" and active and can stress out a slower moving Betta. Your best bet would be 8 Neons, 8 Rasbora and a small species of Pleco *or* the Cory. All of this depends on planting and filtration. And have a backup plan should your Betta not be good with tank mates.
I should have clarified, I meant a Pleco or Cories, not both at once. I would ideally like to go with Cories or a Pleco, and maybe a couple snails, so the betta won't feel as territorial
I'm not sure if there's a difference between bristlenose and bushynose pleco, but I personally think a 10 gallon tank is unsuitable for a bristlenose pleco. I kept a full-grown bristlenose in a 15 gallon tank, and even then it seemed rather cramped. You also have to keep in mind that plecos produce a great deal of waste, so you'll want filtration that can handle their bioload.
I think a smaller species of corydoras is a better option for a tank of this size.
