Arrow What to do with tag-along snail?

I feel a bit silly being concerned about this, but I found a small (1mm) nerite snail on some anarchis I bought. I isolated the snail into a small container left over from a marimo ball I broke apart. I have a 2.5g tank that is still being cycled fish-in. I also have no algae issues aside from the marimo I'm purposely trying to get to bind to some mopani wood and the slime mopani gives off.

I've heard this is too small a set-up for much more than my betta. Should I just get rid of the snail altogether?

Nerites only eat algae, so if you aren't getting much of it then I would be worried about it starving, sadly. Got any friends you could rehome him too?

If you keep him you're going to have to grow him some algae which can take awhile. Until then you'll have to supplement his food with algae tabs, blanched spinach, and other veggies like that, then hope that it decides to eat some.

I think you could keep one in your 2.5 gal with the betta, but you're really going to have to stay on top of water changes since they do seem to put out a lot of waste.

One other drawback is that if the snail is a female it will produce eggs, although they will not hatch in a freshwater tank. I got really lucky in that my two seem to both be male.

Could you bring it back to the place you got the plants from?

Nerite snails only breed in brackish water so that it's almost impossible for a 1mm baby comes with a freshwater plant. I'm pretty sure what you got is a bladder or pond snail.

Do you think that's what it is?

I bought the anacharis from PetSmart and the tank it came from only held nerite snails and gold mystery snails (according to the signs and employees). Its very much not gold from its shell.

Unfortunately I don't know anyone who needs a snail, or even keeps fish in my area to rehome it.

Petsmart? Then it's a bladder snail.

They have bladder snails in every single tank. Horned Nerite is the smallest and they are about pea size when Petsmart get shipment.

So update on this snail.

Good news (or bad news?): It hasn't died in isolation.

Bad news (or worse?):I may have understated its size... that or it grew a lot over the last few days. It seems to be close to 1cm.

Heres a few pics of what it looks like:

I'm still not sure what to do with it. If it were a nerite, I would consider keeping it to clean the tank in the future... but a pond snail seems like a big liability. I live by a creek, do you think I could release it there?

It's never a nerite. It is a bladder snail.

Do NOT release it in the wild or flush in the toilet. In some states releasing into the environment is against the law to protect the native species.

You have two options: Keep it or kill it. Or you can return to Petsmart where it came from.

It looks like a bladder snail to me, neither of my nerites look anything like that.

Here's a blog post on them http://www.myaquariumclub.com/a-shor...ails-9990.html

I'll take your advice and return it though.
