Hi grim - love the name 'Ghoul'.
Male bettas aren't worried by being solitary- all their inbuilt aggression is designed to keep them that way. They don't really have a concept of 'buddies', as it were, if you don't count being friendly to the ones who provide the food, lol.
I have read several threads about bettas snacking on small snails, so don't be surprised if he gets around to nomming on those. He might not, of course, but if you're really worried about the snails, perhaps keep an eye on them or move them to another tank.
Cheers. I think he loves it too!. Love the name Sid Fishus, punk fan over here :D
Also, I do believe he's starting to feel confortable with me, he doesn't even get scared when I touch (or even tap on) the glass, he follows me around. I'm starting to discover his personality, which is great. He does seem to be a tad violent, he's able to see the fish in my community tank (they're aligned side by side) and he keeps trying to get to them from time to time. I think it's about time that I build a lid for his tank (I know I should have done that before, but I couldn't get around to doing it).
It's also not uncommon for a betta to nip off an antennae every now and then. The hunting behavior seems pretty normal since it was probably the first time he'd seen something live and moving and smaller than him. Musta triggered his wild instincts.
Dang, that's bad news. I'll move the snails to the comunity tank once I get home. I don't want to take the risk, I care for a snail as much as I care for any of the fish in my tanks. And these yellow buggesr, I actually love them, antenae included :D
Any ideas as to what I could add to this small tank? I'd like to have something that stimulates him, but nat as much as to make him commit murder.
Thanks to both of you for your responses!
That's Ghoul in my avatar by the way. Too bad the picture doesn't really show it, but he's not just white, he has blue-ish reflexes (kind of like the inside of a shell), with red fins.
