Betta sizes/age at petstores?

In the US, I went to a Petsmart and a Petco, and in both I found that the bettas were a lot smaller than the ones I've seen at home (Montreal, Canada). The ones I've seen in stores around me I assumed were adult sized, about 2-3 inches in the body. Most of the ones I saw in the US were only about half that. They didn't look like the pictures of babies that I've seen on here, they were fully coloured and had decent sized fins - pretty much adults in miniature. Are they just a little bit younger? And if so, does anyone know why there's this weird difference between stores there and here?

they could have been very well stunted. A lot of my females were 3, but awfully small.... Especially compared to my new ones, who are only a year old.

Breed for the breed, not for the money; the words any REAL breeder would understand.

You must know nothing in order to know all, for all is nothing and nothing is for all.

I just go look at pictures of a bettas at certain stages an ages when I get a betta and compare them to that. Alot of bettas I rescued from Petco looked a month old.

I also go on youtube as another source and type in a betta at a certain age and see if they resemble like my betta.

Okay, so I went back to a few petstores in my area, and I don't think the difference was as big as I had thought. One store had tiny ones just like that, and at the others they only looked slightly bigger. Now I'm thinking that my idea of their size came from the fact that at these places they're in round jars that really magnify them
