Thanks. I'll see what I can do. At least she's willing to give it to someone after the class session. She only needs it for a week, so hopefully I can get it into the hands of someone that will take care of it. If I had mine, I'd being him in his tank for the students to see. My tank isn't done cycling, though.

Without "bugs", we would lose about 1/3 of our food, be nose high in decay, and entire ecosystems (including everything that supports the popular animals!) would collapse.

The LFS would not sell her a goldfish, anyway. :D They asked what size tank, etc., and told her it would not be appropriate.

My LFS is AMAZING, seriously! The owner is so knowledgable, and he makes sure his employees know at least the basic care and compatibility of the fish.

YAY!!! If you don't mind me asking, where in Illinois are you from? I go to school in Iowa, but I'm from Rock Island, IL, and there aren't many places outside of the big chain stores to find fish.

I thought they needed 20 gallons at the bare minimum for one fish...?

My church has a betta in a classroom. i rescued it last summer - they had it in a tiny tiny jar, cloudy and slimy. I brought it back when school started again in a much bigger bowl, with a plant, appropriate food, and thorough instructions. The teacher was very appreciative. she did not take poor care on purpose, she did what she thought (or was told by wherever she bought it) was right. the fish is now happy, healthy, getting weekly water changes, lots of attention and love. i dont worry about heat cause they keep the school sweltering - so, a happy ending, an educated teacher, and i get to babysit that fine fishy during the holidays and summer vacation!!!

Actually, 20 gallons per fancy goldfish and 55 gallons per comet or "feeder" goldfish :)
