the background of the person that told you that is important. if its from a chain pet store then theres a good chance its from improper training. most employees dont know all the facts nor does the company even try to enforce the optimum training. there are still many myths about conditions that pets should be kept in circulation in pet stores.

that's fair enough, individuals do have their own opinions. i do hope you find a suitable arragement for all the 4 fish.

I have to disagree with the person who told you that. "7 fish" is extremely vague. A ten gallon could hold 7 bettas, at a push, or 7 tetras, but platies have a relatively large bioload and a 10 gallon is fully stocked with 4 platies, nothing else.

Also, as you have 3 platies, it sounds like you are proposing a four-female sorority. That is extremely risky - sororities are not stable groups and at least 5 is recommended for the security of the fish. In a 10 gallon, the safest thing is to have 6 females and nothing else.

Basically, a 10 gallon just doesn't have the capacity, in terms of both space and bioload, to safely house both your platies and a sorority.

Honestly, I'm not trying to be mean or critical, I just want to be helpful. :)

Life.

Well I lost one of the platies today so that will cut down on the bioload and I'm thinking of giving the other two away as I can't get the 10 gallon set up yet and prolly doing the 7 female sorority in the 10

If you won't have any platies, I would stick to just 6. :) It's a more manageable load.

i may end up doing just six. ive had a few single males but ive never had more than one betta per tank so the minimal would be best for me right now

I agree with everyone else that you should put the male in the 10g and the females in the 29g. 7 fish to a 10g is a lot, ideally they should have at least 2 gallons each (the rule a gallon to an inch of fish does apply to bettas) if they're going to be housed together, to prevent overcrowding which will result in fighting. I mean, it could house them, and only them, but there's also more of a chance that your fish will fight because of lack of space. Plus if you put them in the 29g, you can have a more fish diverse aquarium, and that's always fun. 1 fish in a whole 29g... it just sounds so lonely lol.
