If you started with wilds how long would it take to get a VT

A friend and I were talking about this the other day..

If you were to pick up a pair of Bettas from the wild and continued breeding them and doing everything properly.. how long do you think it would take to make a Betta similar to our "store brand" Betta the Veiltail?

The Veiltail was a mutation, so it could never happen or it could happen next spawn.
I believe this was a somatic mutation meaning it just happened, there is more to the explanation but this is an easy explain
