Little Rage...

So I spontaneously started a sorority the other day, rearranging my 20gal so seven female bettas could take over...

Because I found some lovely girls at a pet shop, all together and no wars, stress stripes or wounds. Wonderful!

Except they were in a 1gal container. Together. All seven of them.

Of course, I bought the lot :P I'm not really into rescuing, I have too much of a doggy background so I feel more like I'm paying the proverbial puppy mill than rescuing fish, but I lost my mind a little.

Females aren't that common around here, so can anyone tell me...is this normal? That's 0.15gal each, wtf?!

No its not normal to have 7 females in a 1g tank. Most often you see them in cups like the males. Some stores will have females in 10g-20g tanks, which is what my favorite LFS does.

Yeah, that's not normal at all. Big chains keep females in cups like all the rest. My LFS keeps sorority tanks, but it's usually about 8-10 in a 20 gal, which is generous. They could probably keep more in a tank that size, but they don't.

huh well there you go! Thanks guys; I do actually see females in 20g tanks at my LFS, but it's usually pretty hard to watch...alpha female isn't hard to pick, and the remains of the others aren't pleasant to see! :S

I'm curious to see if mine become more aggressive towards each other now they've got more room...maybe they were just so stressed in their other tank they didn't care for social standards!
