Going to walmart....

So I might go to walmart today. I want a betta bad! Rescuing is always good right? I just want a veil tail so I hope I find one that is at least a little healthy. (most of the time there are always extremely sick bettas and only a few)

Does anyone have tips for picking out a betta????

Pick the one that screams "TAKE ME!" you'll know which one ;)

Giving tips for picking out a betta is a little difficult because it is up to you to decide what you want. You may decide to pick the healthiest and most colorful betta there, but you also might see one of those little sick guys who just speaks to you, even if he can barely move. If you are going to rescue, just make sure to have all the necessary things to bring him around - heated tank, medication if needed, etc. :) Good luck!

Males: Cobalt, Storm, Cloud, ????

Unless you can negotiate it to a lower price or for free I don't see the point in rescuing. Just encourages them to get more since they appear to be selling well.

Everything happens for a reason, but the reason isn't always good.

I think that's an opinion type of thing. In all honesty, I don't think many people "rescue" bettas from my local Walmart (I work there, so I see a lot of what goes on). Mostly people who purchase them here are little kids and people who are just kind of going OOOH FISHIE! Right now, at our Walmart at least, the remaining bettas are "leftover" from the big shipment that came around for the beginning of the school year, so they need a little extra love and, as morbid as it sounds, probably won't last on the shelf much longer. I imagine it's the same at a lot of Walmarts around the country at the moment.

I think one rescue really isn't going to make much of a difference in terms of how many we're selling (or think we're selling), although at a really low-traffic Walmart I suppose it might!

Find a few you like and examine them very closely. Look for black edges or eroding fins. Nothing fuzzy should be on it's body no white dots. Gills should look healthy. How responsive is the betta to you and other fish? Out the few you like the best pick the one that looks the healthiest. I can tell most bettas bounce back with some TLC. I try not to get unhealthy ones now I have lots of fish so there is some risk of accidental cross contamination if I bring a sick fish home. I just consider when I take one home he or she lives. I didn't take one a I liked about two months ago. I was despondent to find it later dead and molding in a cup. When you leave with a fish you like and are happy with and know you will both be better off. If you get a rescue be sure you handle it last in all fish care to be more assure you don't spread anything.

If you can ask them what day they get deliveries you could do what I did. I watched them put the fishes on the shelf and sniped the best guy. He's purple and redish pink and healthy so far.

Is there a reason why you would not consider one of the petsomethings?
