It very well may have been the cold. I don't have a thermometer, but it has been unseasonably warm here and we haven't needed the heat.

That said, we went to the store today and I got to see how they are kept. They are kept as the first thing you see when you walk through the door and it is in another town that is colder than it is here. Plus they are still running AC and it was just cold in the store.

Might have been that, they were all pretty dormant on display and just kind of lethargic even when prompted. We got the money back and I'm going to wait a few months to try again. Apparently bettas are a hot seller this christmas season...

in a case such as that,you want to take extra time acclimating them.if they were from a different town the source water may be different.a large ph swing from two different sources would have this sort of effect also.i tend to go over the norm as far as acclimation,sometimes taking a few hours to get the job done.same thing with a drastic temp need to slowly get them used to the new temperature.
