I don't have a hood. My tank has weird measurements, so the standard 10 gallon hood doesn't fit. Some people have suggested going and drilling some plexiglass, but tbh I don't really have the money for that right now. I have the water lowered a few inches instead.

I'm guessing he must have squeezed in the bottom somewhere that I couldn't see. Since I've re-adjusted it, though, he's stayed on his side.

Phew! Close call on that one. Glad to hear he's ok.

Animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.

Hmm.. I don't know how its shaped or if you have time but I've seen a tank that made a top out of plastic mesh and report covers.. the exact same way you would make a divider except to fit over the top... it worked really well.

He's probably fine now and has learned his lesson ;)
