Tank: 6.6 gallon, divided in two, currently one betta

Dimensions: 24" long, 9" high, approx 9" deep

Problem: Due to where the opening for the filter is, the water does not circulate well. Also, the filter creates too much flow (even with baffle) for a betta. I am also restricted by outlets (I currently have a heater, filter, light, and air pump plugged in and can't do any more).

Picture of opening for the filter/heater/airline:

Things that have been tried: I currently have the filter that came with it on the one side and an air stone on the other. But I am finding that I need something with less flow on the filter side, and some sort of filter on the other side. I tried two of the Penn-Plax Small World filters, one on each side, but they just weren't powerful enough to keep a cycle. I had the Tetra internal filter, but it was too tall and the water kept hitting the top and leaking out the back.

Help: Can anyone recommend some sort of filters that I could put on both sides to keep the cycle going, water flowing, but not a huge output so the guys don't get stressed? The Small World filters were the best, but just didn't quite cut it with the cycle. I am considering some of these:

Cascade internal filter
Corner Filter
Hagen Elite

any ideas/help would be VERRRRRRY appreciated!!!
