Siphon

I just decided to go out and buy a siphon from walmart on an impulse. I cant get the darned thing to work! No water comes out and Im following the little-detailed instrutions as best I can. Any tips?

Explain what you are doing...
at what level is the tank from the floor for gravity flow?

Well the tank is about 3 and a half feet above the bucket. I am placing the end of the hose in the bucket and the cylinder in the tank., first I completly submerge the cylinder then I pump it up and down to start the suction, but it never starts. I get a little water out but only when Im pumping.

I never could get a gravel vac to work for me.

Your better off just getting one of the ones thats is just a hose like this http://www.petco.com/product/104980/...es_Maintenance
They wrok pretty well. The only down side to it is getting a little bit of tank water in your mouth but if you do it enough then youll be able to time it. Besides a little tank water wont kill you

Thats what it looks like! And I finally got it to work, I wasnt pumping it fast enough.

Some gravel vacs aren't very good.
I've had three different kinds and the one that worked the best for me was the Fluval one.
