A little Thank You story.

So, when I got Zombie, I really wanted a little companion. Well Zombie's become a beloved member of my family. Even though it's just me and him, we're a family.

I mean, I would be devastated if Zombie died. When I first got him, I was pretty sure I would suck so bad at taking care of him, that he would die right away. But I'm really getting the hang out it, and I think he's doing well.

Had I not found this site I probably would've already have killed him w/ my improper care.

Oh and my friends are trying to tell me, via facebook when I update about Zombie, how I don't need a heater, and have never mentioned a water conditioner, but I keep telling them that I'd rather listen to the "experts" (ya'll) and give him the best possible life. They've told me that a light is all the heat I need, well actually the light on my tank doesn't work for some reason, so the heater is actually needed. Oh and even if the light worked, which it did once for like an hour, it barely put off any light. So I know that even if it worked, it would NOT put off enough heat.

So anyways, thank you everyone for your advice and support.

My friends are exactly the same. My boyfriend actually used to laugh at me about how "possessed" I'd become (actual word choice) with my betta.

Then, he bought a bettaboy of his own. He understands, now.

I've been getting a lot of "well-meaning" advice. "They don't need heaters", "they're just fish!", "you don't have to feed them every day!", "they don't need a huge tank!" (my former tank was a 2.5 gallon, which I had believed was a 1.5 until I used it to fill my 10-gal last night in under 4 trips), and my favorite, "You don't have to change their water that often!", from a friend who had a betta in a 5-gal bowl, fed it 1x a fortnight, and cleaned it *maybe* that often.

People just don't understand.

I was told that no matter what size the tank, as long as it had a filter I rarely had to change the water and a light was all I needed to keep him warm.

Needless to say, I think I need to bump up to daily water changes because Zombie's looking a little moppy(sp?) his fins aren't as spread out, and he's not as vibrant as he was when I first put him in this tank.

Water changes are all dependent on the fish. For some reason, mine thrive when I only change their water once a week, but at my former school, I'd have to change my boy's water every other day (or every third) due to the contaminants. All the advice on these forums means nothing if the fish doesn't respond to it, and each fish is different.

That's a very good point. I did take that into consideration. That's why I take advice and then do a trial and error, and see how Zombie responds.

And that's what makes a good fish parent. :)
