All of my bettas love to jump for their food because they know if they do jump they get an extra one.

The results are in!

I tried this a while ago before I even saw your post - it's really fun to train bettas! i taught mine how to eat from my hand, go through a small plastic hoop that I made, and jump for food. The first and last are definitely pretty simple - I'll explain how I did the second one with my old betta Chauncey.

I first taught him to eat from my hand (underwater, of course!) and then I introduced the hoop. When he swam toward it, I rewarded him with food. Next I placed the hoop in the tank and held the food on the other side. With enough encouraging, he saw the food and swam through the hoop to get it!

Bettas are really smart!

My fishies all jump for food, and they DEFINITELY know when I pick up the food container! I taught Chance to swim into the clear cup for water changes (when he lived in a separate smaller tank) by luring him in and whenever he swam in and I scooped him up, I'd feed him. He got to the point where he'd just swim right in! I'm not sure if he'll do it now that he's in the big tank and we haven't tried it in a while. He's a smart fellow though. A little Houdini.

One of my girls is a jumper and I wish I could train her to not jump.

If I go near the tank...*jump*. If I remove the lid *jump*. One day she'll end up on the floor; I have a net RIGHT next to their tank just in case.

She jumped up and took the food from my fingers the other day :(, oh and bit me lol. Although she bit me when I was re-arranging the plants in the tank the other day and it was feeding time. The other girls have nibbled but not full blown biting like she does to me haha.

A few of my other girls jump occasionally but not as often as her. My male jumped once and I was sooo worried he'd jump out of his tank at feeding time lol; but he's never jumped since :).

I've been bitten. Fishy bit me once and let's just say, it's lucky they don't have teeth! He was such a big fish and had such a big mouth he would have hurt! :P
