Bettas are very intelligent and trainable, although it is disadvantaged in the area of trainability compared to other fish because constantly giving a betta food rewards in order to train them is problematic, since a betta will quickly become bloated. Goldfish and large cichlids like oscars are more trainable because they can take more consecutive food rewards without feeling the consequences, so the behavior is more easily ingrained in these fish. I have seen plenty of bettas swim through hoops, and other simple tricks.
