Aquarium Salt - A poll

As with most aspects of Betta care, I've seen differing opinions on the use of Aquarium Salt. I know it can be used as a "bath" for treating some ailments, but I have also read that it can be used (in small quantities) as a regular additive to the tank water.

So, I'm making a poll to see what the people here think. I'm always interested to see the different views are on things. :)

I use only as treatment for sick fish and IMHO, that's the best way to go about it. Some use it regularly as a 'preventative', but thats not very effective IME/O and when your fish DO come down with something, you have to really up the dosage of salt because whatever they caught would be resistant to the amount of salt you already have in there.
Besides, bettas ARE freshwater fish...they don't really need salt, even if they can tolerate it :P I've also read that the use of salt over a long enough period of time can even be damaging, but that's up for debate...I'm not sure on that one.

I only use it for treatment because I've heard that it can harm your fish if you use for a long period of time.

55 gallon planted tank, starting over!!!( looking crappy, needs a major rescape)

I used to use it regularly, since when I started here that was what everyone suggested... now, though, I hear constant salt is bad so I've stopped. Amazing how much an idea can change in just a year o.O

too frequent doses of aquarium salt will damage your betta's intestines. Only use it to treat sicknesses and problems like finrot.

Thanks for all the votes and replies!

It's funny though, some years back I remember that the big thing was to put a bit of salt in the water all the time. Seems like that has changed. It makes sense though, Bettas are not salt-water fish. :P

Lol, yeah, I remember several people did that when I first started out to....I never did, it didn't make sense to my why one would keep a freshwater fish in salted water all the time. ;P

Haha, I suppose we've just discovered more and more over the years xD Who knows what else we'll figure out about the hobby a year from now ;)
