Male bettas generally have long fins and bright colors. Though there is a short fin type called plakats (see my avatar pic). Female bettas have short fins and are generally not as brightly colored.

Or sometimes PK males are sold as females:

Who am I? Well I am a Junior Member of the International Betta Congress and a breeder of white HMPKs, red dragon HMPKs, black/red dragon HMPKs, metallic multi HMPKs, blue masked HMPKs, and now multi color HMs. Soon to add black HMs. I will be showing in New Breeder class in fall of 2012.

Thanks for the info it's amazing what kind of forums you can find on the internet... but this is a great one! my boy has a big tail with beautiful little flippers, his name is Ditto, i feel bad for him b/c hes in there by himself.. i'm gonna get him a little mate, it's only right, but to be sure i will post a pick of Ditto so you guys or the pet shop can decide his gender for me. I'm an Aquarian and love fish, i was just giving a 85- 100 gallon tank, not sure the exact size, i will make it salt water.. but i will not forget about Ditto!!! I doubt i can put Ditto in there with the other salt fish, but hey im still doing research and thank you all guys.

They aren't salt water fish, though fresh water aquarium salt can be used to help them get better if they get sick(but don't over use it, no more than 10 days!)

If you give him a 5 gallon heated tank, or even better, a 10 gallon heated tank, he'll think he's in fishy heaven!
