I feel really bad

I am not ashamed to admit that I work at a petsmart and in my location we actually take really good care of our pets, bettas included. Unfortunently our bettas have to be kept in those depressing cups which we change every Mon, Wed, and Fri so the longest time they go without a change is over the weekend. I had to do a change today and we had two dumbos which were really stressed as in clamped fins, one was a little better then the other. I felt really bad for them and tried to get through their changes without stressing them further. Sadly when checking on them later one did not make it through the water change. I just feel so bad and wish I could have done something further for them. We do have a small thing of stress coat at the podium where we bag the fish from the other tanks and I did give them each a small dose of it but I was just to late and fear adding the stress coat may have made the situation worse. Oh and when we change the water we always take water from one of our established filtered and planted tanks that does not hold fish. We also keep our tanks very clean and have been complimented on it many times.

Having fish die on your watch sucks. Some stores are better than others, in our city we have 3 Petsmarts and they are pretty good when it comes to their fish. I have bought a lot of fish there over the years. I have moved to another change Pet Supply Plus because the fish guy is no knowledgeable and helpful, I learn stuff every time I talk to him.

We can't save all the fish the best we can do is save those we can and make those we can comfortable.

Thank you Warhawk, I always try my best when I see bettas in poor condition at work. Like how not to long ago I had to remove a nice ruby red colored betta from the floor because his delta fin was in horrid condition. He had been tail biting so there were large chunks of tail missing. His cup said he was a crown tail but with how bad his fin had been you wouldn't have been able to tell. How my coworker before me never notice.. I just felt so bad and wanted to take him home to nurse back to health. :(

I couldn't though because I currently have Titan in the only tank I own.. that spunky goofball of a boy... he is tail biting himself. I suspect he is doing so because he thinks his own reflection is another male and is displacing his aggression on himself.

That is why I know I can't work at a pet store. I would bring them home all the time. I sometimes think if i got a part time job their I could save money on buying supplies then I know I would just buy more stuff so not really getting me any where. But I have gotten to know some of the people well I might tell them I will be willing to nurse the fish back to health. That would mean I have to set up more tanks, my wife might not be real happy but there is room for a few more.

Truth be told.. working there even part time is really helpful in my case. Once a month I get a free bag of cat food which saves money... which I then use on the rabbit. >.<

I just got off work and I am even more depressed now.. we have a beautiful half moon boy back in the sick room. He is a deep blue with white rimming on all of his fins.. he is tail biting badly I could see pieces floating around his cup... if I wouldn't have gotten in trouble I would have stolen him from work :<

AWW! Poor guy. Honestly I'd like to work at PetCo. or Pet Smart simply for the reason of better educating people before they go off and buy a Betta or fish they might not be able to properly care for and it die. But I don't think I'd have a bedroom or paycheck left  I'd buy too many Bettas and Betta stuff!

Working at PetSmart (also in Iowa) is how I ended up with dozens of fish. The only fish I still have from when I went through my "buy every sick fish phase" is Alfie who will be 3 this summer, but over the 3 years I worked there I probably brought home almost 100 fish. To be honest, I enjoyed my coworkers, but morally I couldn't do it anymore.

I want to work at Petco or somewhere just to better educate people on the care of betta fish but I know I'd bring home a bunch more and I'd be out of a dorm next year. and a house because my mom would kick me out lol
