Good Evening

Hello Everyone,

I am new to the forum as of today. A friend and local betta breeder recommended that I extend my love of bettas to an online community. Afterall, I did that for my cichlids and general fish.

So I spend a bit scoping out the community here and decided that it looked friendly and diverse enough for my tastes. Seems like their is everything from betta fanciers, to imported, and breeders. A very nice mix! Hopefully I will be able to integrate myself into the community.

I do not have much knowledge or experience to bring to the table, but I do enjoy fish and I am always willing and ready to learn more. So about me and my fishie friends:

Me:
Name: Kim
Age: 27
Location: east coast of Canada
Job: Grad student in Chem / Fish store grunt
Hobbies: Betta fish, Cichlids, Newts

I have over 200 gallons of water sitting in my appartment housing my various wet pets. The bettas are all gathered around my desk and are some of my favorites! They balance out my 75 gallon and 55 gallon cichlid tanks and remind me to enjoy the small things that bring you joy.

You can meet the gang here:

Welcome to the forum Kim and the wonderful world of Betta keeping......love to see some pic of your cichlids too, a very nice species of fish-I kept them many years ago myself and I sure do miss them-some really interesting behaviors and breeding/spawning along with prenatal care with some...been thinking about getting them again to at least help in some of my culling.

What are your plans with betta...just keeping or any plans of breeding/spawning

I have over a ton of water with all my tanks all sitting in my living room-I keep the natural planted tanks with soil substrate and raise Betta, blond guppies, long finned plecos, neon tetra, long finned danios, marble crayfish, red cherry and yellow shrimp right now and about 15 different species of plants....I plan to add the fresh water puffer as soon as I can find some and try and spawn them for something new to mess with this winter....laffs....

It must be fun working at a pet shop and getting first pick with the species you like....I am afraid I would bring too many home and I have enough tanks...lol......

Again welcome to the forum...a pretty good group of folks here.....

Thank you for the welcome. I've already had a chance to chat with some very nice members of the forum in the picture section. Definitely seems like everyone has mutual respect for each other and are generally friendly. It is very refreshing.

I'd love to show you some pictures of my cichlids sometime too. I keep mostly species from lake Malawi and I specialize in the more peaceful ones. Phenochilus placidochromis tanzania, white labs (similar to the yellows, but all white with the black markings), black acei, P. Scofoli, P. electra. It is a pretty mixed bunch, but I have some nice breeding going on.

Wiith the Bettas I am mostly just interested in keeping them as a pet for now. As a student I do not have much time to devote to my fish hobby (relatively speaking) and I don't think I could raise a spawn of betta fry. As you undoubtably know, cichlids are much easier to breed. Simply add water!

Do you know what kind of FW puffer you are interested in? My faves are the pignose puffer (had one at the shop named Clyde) and the red eyes. Both stay a pretty decent size :D.... But then.. there are the dwarfs, so cute, but so bad! You can't help but love them.

I have 9 tanks so far... working at a pet shop is dangerous for my paycheck! I've had to force myself to prioritize so that I don't end up with more tanks!

I already welcomed you in your picture topic, but welcome again! I'd love to get dwarf puffers too...there are actually so many different things that I want to try once I get the room to do so! What kind of newts do you have? I'd love to see pictures of them.
