So after a conversation with a friend of mine last night about her new dwarf frog I was reminded that my town really does have it's own pet store, mostly fish so that's why I'm going to refer to it as a LFS, albeit a not very good one, here is why:
They had 6 male bettas (not sure if that is a good number or not), 5 of which all looked REALLY healthy (the purple one even chased my finger when I held it up to the cup and he flared like mad at my brother
) and were swimming in plastic cups from the grocery store on the other side of the railroad tracks (if I had the money I would've bought this one blue betta and named him "Beef Liver") and the other was in a really tiny aquarium, that was being filtered but he didn't move at all and I noticed some green algae (?) floating around in the aquarium. But if I had the money and space in my room I would've bought them all (or at least the first three I saw and fell deeply in love with) and if I had to keep them in a temporary (and I do mean temporary, thanks to you guys) 1 gallon aquarium until a better home could be provided for them. They were not marked as to what type of bettas they were and there really wasn't enough water for their fins to fully spread, sadly.
As for the female bettas...they were in a much larger tank, with the dwarf frogs, some mollies, and I can't remember that other type of fish. It wasn't really stocked well with plants so the girls had nowhere to hide, I didn't get a good look at them to check for torn fins or anything, because my brother was with me, growing impatient and was starting to get annoying. >_> But when I do go back (because it's a FISH STORE in MY TOWN I want to be nosy) is there anything else I should look for with the girls?
Why didn't I talk to someone who worked there about this? It is also a dog grooming business, so they had customers coming in at all times, looked like they knew NOTHING about fish and the manager wasn't there so I'm not too sure if the message would get to her. But now that I think about it...next time she's there I could ask for a job, I know nothing about grooming dogs but thanks to this forum I know a lot more than I did about bettas, they also had some more tropical fish there that I wish I had written down the names of to look up and research over on Tropical Fish Keeping (there was one that was a big as my hand!). But I could make sure they wouldn't go home with the .5 gallon aquariums that were overstocked on the shelves below them.
So although it's a crappy LFS, do you guys think that by some touch of fate I could get employed there and bring the store out of its drabbiness (I really wish you guys could see this place, my brother thought it was a house until he saw the sign over the door). I won't be preventing the "fish in a cup" thing but I COULD reduce betta ignorance...maybe, just a little, right? Wish me luck...
