Flaring.

Are you supposed to make your betta flare? Like is it part of their care or something thats benificial? I always wondered because a lot of people say "if you make your betta flare". I guess I'm worried that I'm just making him made if I try to make him flare. =/

I believe it helps stretch out their fins. As long as you don't over-do it, it is good.

A few minutes a day is beneficial for them, it stretches their fins and keeps them in good spirits.
I'm very particular in letting my fish flare unsupervised... if they get stressed out you might end up with a tailbiter

So how do I help him flare? He doesn't flare when I walk up to the tank unexpectedly or when I tap on the side of the tank to get his attention to eat.

You can place a mirror next to the tank during flaring session.

Flaring all day doesn't seem to be a problem. My divider is see through, and not covered by plants. My males spend a couple minutes a day flaring. Bettas are not really solitary fish. In the wild they come in to contact with other bettas multiple times a week. Keeping them in solitary all the time can lead to stress and other things.

I only have 1 betta left, but he's a cool blue marble!
