I was reading somewhere about the decline in popularity of VTs and how people don't want to breed them anymore and they aren't being allowed in show circuits. I was just curious of some opinions from a betta loving community. I know the new tail types can be SPECTACULAR but my little VTs still fascinate me while swimming and flaring.
when breeding a vt x something else the vt line dominates so the fry become majority vts and the decline would be because the quality of vts are dropping and with the amount of low quality vts pumping out if you saw a low quality vt beside a pretty dt or hm or sd r ct im sure youd go the other yes?
it's partly because they've been so overbred by pet store breeders. i go to the pet store, and i see mostly Veils and Crowns. i was super lucky to grab up Ichi, who's a possible Delta. that's part of why i'm including Veils in my Orange Dal line, because no one wants to breed them other than people looking to make a quick buck, and pet store breeders.

I do see your point. I guess my problem is I have no access to HMs or DTs since any LPS around me only have VTs and CTs. It's really upsetting that even the specialty aquarium store near me doesn't carry a wider variety.

I'm glad to see you're including them in breeding. I was looking at breeding, not necessarily with the interntion of trying any time soon but after I read the article/post, I was just surprised. I got the impression that no one outside of pet stores was breeding them.
well, the most common Orange Dalmatian IS the Veiltail, so why not try to improve the Veil line, while i'm breeding something few do? x3 my first betta was an orange dal veil, so they hold a special place in my heart. :d
All of the yellow bettas I've seen are beautiful. And the orange ones too, for that matter. All mine are only blue and red, with the exception of one female that is pearly peach kinda, it really is the abnormal colour in the pet store that makes me want to take the little guy/gal home but the great colours are soooo rare!
hmm lets see:
dastan: red blu purple vt
Nero red cambodian 4 ray ct
benny: dark blue and white vt butterfly
Melvin: metalic blue and white vt buttercfly (multi specked head)
Louie: white 2 ray ct with red splashes and his fins range from see through to aqua blue
Sponge bob: yellow with iridescent blue rays vt
004: gold with red fins sdxhm
agent 11: metalic sd x hm purple and black butterfly
Pippin: masked red cambodian butterfly vt
Charz: steel blue 4 ray ct
Agent 88: silver metalic sd xhm
bronxie: silver plum metalic sd x hm
Cinder plum silver metalic sd x hm
Lexi: silver/bronze with red trim metalic sd x hm 4ray ct
Ailie: silver metalic sd x hm 4ray ct
Caela: silver bronze metalic sd x hm 4ray ct
Rayne: yellow metalic sd x hm 4ray ct (fins are seethrough developing purple metallic patches)
that's why, when i go to the pet store on Tuesdays, they usually only have red Veils, or blue veils. because those are the most common ones, and everyone grabs up the cool-looking ones, like the yellows, orange dals, butterflies, ect. poor red and blue guys. D:
good thing about my local pet store? they look just as healthy on day 7, as they did day 1. they look just as healthy on day 14, as they did day 1. they take amazing care of their bettas.
That's fantastic! I bought a female a while back and she died the next day. When I went back to get another fish, the salesperson told me I didn't have to worry this time because they had just cleaned up and changed the water and removed the dead ones.. I'm really careful now and look for smaller hopefully younger and newer fish.
i haven't seen a dead fish in there in forever. o3o i've not even seen any sick ones! :d they sometimes let the veils live in the tanks in back until they get sold. o3o
That's a store that seems to actually care. The bettas in my local store are shoved on three narrow shelves and you have to dig to see them all. Everyone gets bumped around and pushed up real close in their tiny little cups .
There's another store farther away that displays on their plant tanks, which is pretty but they never have a big selection so I never make the trek there.
Pet Lover's has theirs on this cute twirly shelf thing, kinda like a spice rack. no one is too close to anyone, and they're all displayed at once. :3 it's really cute. also, they're right next to the register, so the staff can keep people from fighting them!
o3o i can't help it. i adore Pet Lover's. :d that's where i get all my bettas! except Mr. Auron, who was from Petsmart and died the night i got him, Remy, a walmart betta who died two days later, and Chappy, who i got from a friend as a fry and i spoil too much. .____o
they know quite a bit. whenever i go in to buy one, i don't have someone trying to sell me a crappy tank. >.> i'm tempted to go back soon, and see if a new person's working, and ask their advice. :d
Well, I'm loving the advice I'm getting here because anyone I've spoken to has fed me lies. grr! My local store is a Petsmart and the bettas are shoved in the end of a row with all the tiny little fancy bowls and plants.
Pet Lover's is amazing with ALL their pets! :O their bunnies are so friendly, the parrots aren't all nippy, the rodents look good, as do the reptiles, the fish are always amazing... <3
It sounds like a store from a kids cartoon.. The person just walks in and all the pets are jolly and happy and you go home happy everytime! I also hope this store gets massive business from all the advertisement!
xD we stole another pet store's customers for them. this couple wanted a bunny for their daughter while we were at a mostly dog-centered pet store. the lady trying to sell them the bunny didn't know jack, and the way she had to hold him said their bunnies weren't very handleable. so, my mom pulled the mother to the side, and told her she should go down to Pet Lover's. >w> while i was getting Ichi, they came in, and we talked bunny to them. :d the cute guy who works there was grinning and laughing when mom told him about the couple. xD
but, yes~ even their Veils are amazing. <3 i never see tumors, illness, bent spines~ none of the things i've heard others speak of. :d which is why i'd be okay with using their veils to breed!
