Did you guys have trouble with your first Betta?

even with all the reading I did before I got one, I'm having lots of trouble with mine... it's not even anything I'm really doing in particular... I keep water changes up and everything... he just... seems to have everything that could go wrong with him go wrong with him... ie I'm finally almost done healing his finrot.... BAM he surfs the filter current and brand new rip! -headdesk- or you know, that one stupid corner of the fin rot that refuses to go away? I'm honestly trying to do everything I can for him I swear ;-; but generally you always have trouble with the first pet of a new species, right?.. or is it just me? ;-;" so thus the topic/... I'm just curious... did you guys have trouble with your first boys ( or girls, though I hear they're not as wimpy as the males ) too?

I cant say that I have. It has been almost ten years since I have had my first betta but It wasnt untill I actually educated myself and bought like 7 (im now at 11) that issues started. like ick and my sorority fighting and tail biting so I guess It really just depends on the fish some get sick some dont.

MaggieLynn- huh... funny how that works, ha D: maybe sometimes we try too hard or something when we're educated? >.<;
I'm trying not to blame myself since he is a pet store fish, and after I got him home I did realize his color was bad :/ like too dark and dull, not healthy... so maybe I just picked the wrong one for a first.... x-;" maybe our climate's just bad for exotic pets too, I don't know... I hear loads of people making cold climates work.... maybe they take lengths I can't because my parents think it's silly though?..
I tried to pick my first boy based on his personality.... maybe next time I should just go by healthiness though just untill I've had a few more of them...

I don't recall having troubles with my first beta either, but that was more than 10 years ago. I recently lost 3 of my bettas in couple of days. I bought frozen blood worms that turned out to be infected with something. 2 survived and still doing great. I guess it really depends how strong immune system betta has. Some of them are just weak even in perfect environment, some of them survive almost anything. Just do you best and try to enjoy the betta while you have him.

roadrunner- D: I can't imagine ;-; that's one of those things that always makes me scared to buy anything other than pellets... I'm sorry.... :(
thanks for sharing though... I guess it probably does ( depend on the fish that is )... my stupid boy's just given me the first deathscare tonight and I'm flipping out trying to decide if it's my fault or not x.x I get so stressed over them... I guess sometimes living things just die though ;-; -wilts- I hope he'll pull through <3 I'm just trying to decide if I should get another if he doesn't... on the one hand it seems lame to give up after one try.. but on the other hand the "tries" are lives... so then that doesn't seem like such a simple thing to say either. but I guess fish just die on their own sometimes... and if they're in a pet store they can't have such certain bright futures left there anyway.... and fish aren't generally as simply long-living as say a dog...

Sorry to hear you are having troubles =(
Unfortunately pet shop bought bettas can sometimes come from breeders who are mass producing to sell rather then quality, like puppy mills.. they aren't looking at the genetics, so the more they are bred, the more issues that come up health wise. I have one with a mystery issue, but other then that I've been lucky so far.

Breeder so I have too many to count and too many named to list here!

It's probably just the fish, not your fault. That sucks, I'm sorry. My fish wouldn't eat when I first got him, which brought me to this forum and I realized that the bowl I had him in was a bad environment for him. I switched him to a heated 2.5 gallon tank, and he was suddenly eating, flaring, and bubble nesting.
It sounds like you are a responsible owner and did research though, so it is likely the fish is less hardy than others.
I hope he makes it, but if not, don't give up if you think you can handle another one. There's a MUCH better chance that they'll die in those cups than they will with a loving owner. :)

The first five I had all died in less then 48 hours.
A certain petstore told me if I had a filter, i did not have to change the water...
actually the 1st one lived for a few weeks, but the 4 after him all died overnight. Im guessing ammonia poisining
