It's sad to see bettas at stores treated like chipped glasses, to be thrown away. I recently started working at a LPS and was pleasantly surprised to see how they care for the little guys they get in. Though they're still in the tiny cups (I'm working on that...) the water is changed multiple times each week, and any fish that shows signs of injury or illness is taken to the office, medicated and cared for until it's better. In fact, I just adopted a little tangerine one yesterday that had been being treated for over a month. It's nice to see that some folks do care. (of course, I also rescued a female from PetCo...she's great!)

I would of taken them both home but I have a thing for saving the sad looking ones.
