When mosquitos hatch, they use the water's surface tension as a platform and then shrug out of their larva skins. The wobbling around they do is enough to attract betta attention.. I doubt any will survive to fly loose (and then there's the tank lid).

I hate that it's winter here.. no mozzies!

Your bucket looks fine, MM and you can top the leaves up in autumn, lol.

The other thing you could do is get an old towel or bit of sacking and half cover up the bucket -- don't leave it in full sun, stick it under a tree or by the side of the house that doesn't get afternoon sun.

And a bit of pantyhose over some wire bent into a ring makes a good mozzie net. =P
