When I was little, very little, I used to be terrified by storms, not because of the thunder, or lightning, but because there was this tree outside my bedroom window, a big old silver maple. I was afraid it would be struck by lightning or be blown over in a nightly gust of wind and come crashing down into my room. Because of this, I would go and sleep in my parents bed whenever a storm blew through.
Then one day, I woke up after a particularly fierce storm and a huge old branch from that maple, about 15-20 feel long, had been broken off by the wind and was laying on the front lawn. After that, I wasn't ever really afraid anymore.
