Saving laptop after spilling soda on it.

How can I save my laptop which I accidentally spilled soda on?

Well when people drop their phone in liquid they Usually put it in a bag of uncooked rice.

That's a though one. Yes, you can usually save electronics letting them dry completely before turning them back on but this was soda. The caramel will get sticky after the liquid dries and your keyboard will stick. Best bet would be to open the computer and clean everything with alcohol. Your keyboard will probably need replacing.

along with your trackpad, speakers and possibly your USB and other ports if any soda got in them. if it's not a brand new laptop, it might be cheaper to just buy a new one there are sites that will give you a little money (usually 50 to 100 dollars) to part out your old one, so that should help a bit.

If you can, get your chassis open and make sure there is no moisture on your motherboard, and pull your hard drive just in case any liquid got inside the chassis. That way, if the hardware is toasted, you can take your drive to a computer repair place where they can pull the files off. Or you could slave it to another computer and do it yourself... Your keyboard may be sticky, but parts like that can actually be ordered separately as replacements from most manufacturers. Don't put alcohol on the internal hardware!!! anything that is a circuit board ie motherboard, ram, etc should not be exposed to liquid. I can't tell you how many computers I've gotten in my years of working in end user IT that have seen spills, one lady spilled "coffee" on hers and when I opened it up red wine POURED out of it. At 8 am in the morning :P A soda spill is not necessarily a death sentence, and depending on what is dead a lot of the parts can be replaced as long as the key components are not shorted out from the liquid!

There are SO many resources online that help with that (it seems to be a VERY common problem). I would google just that, and see what you find.
Good luck!

First of all, don't try to turn it on. Take out the battery pack (unless you foolishly bought an apple)

Secondly, the bag of rice idea is pretty common but your laptop can open up (unless you foolishly bought an apple) so I would just suggest opening it up and keeping it in a dry place for a few days.

Thirdly, you shouldn't have to replace anything. Pop out all the keys in your keyboard and put them in a plastic bag so you don't lose them. Get some rubbing alcohol from the drugstore and use Q-tips to carefuly DAB around the bottom of your keyboard. You can wash the popped out keys in the sink (make sure you let them dry). The alcohol will dry very rapidly so it will not damage your laptop.

EDIT: For instructions on how to open up your laptop, just google a "Disassembly Guide" for your laptop brand and model. For example my laptop is an Asus G50V. Asus is the brand and G50V is the model. There is usually a sticker at the bottom side of your laptop (sometimes on the palm pad on the front) that shows you the model.

Just so you know, we bought a laptop for $20 off a guy (btw, it was less then a year old) because he spilled something on it and couldn't get it to work. My husband put in about 12+ hours on it, and low and behold it is working like a brand new computer. BEST $20 investment EVER.
Sometimes all it takes is a little work and research!
