Prickly pear cactus

Anyone have success having a prickly pear cactus as a houseplant for a long time? I recently lost mine which I had for ten years to stem rot.

Ouch.. We've had our for 12 years... And trust me.. Ours are huge but not houseplants.. They grow wildly all over the lawn. We haw them everywhere and I've had my fair Shari of dilemmas with the biggest "momma plant"

Ouch...I used to have cacti, about 20 of them, but I love taking care of my plants, so I watered them every day with the other houseplants, fertilized them, pruned the dead leaves (erm, needles), and they died xD
I won't be getting any more though. My birds fly around too much to risk getting them killed on a cactus O____O
