Travel to Canada

Do I need a passport to travel to Canada by road? I have a passport, but my boyfriend does not. We were talking about taking a quick trip to somewhere in Canada (he's never been out of the US), but I know laws about crossing between the US and Canada changed in the 00's.

I believe you can get in just fine but to get back in you need your passport and they'll do a search of your car and stuff for anything illegal that you might be bringing back is all. But that's as far as I know, but perhaps it's also changed and I didn't know about it either lol

Okay, thanks.

ETA: I know we have a lot of Canadians on the forum. Anyone have a place to recommend to visit in Manitoba or Ontario (north of MN)?

Toronto is peaceful... sometimes...

That photo is resized. It says: "My past does not define me. My strength is an illusion. My calm hides a storm. My innocence is not ignorance.

I would love to go to Toronto (my boyfriend would geek out, he's a huge hockey fan and love the Maple Leafs), but alas it is too far away. I live in Iowa, so pretty much western Ontario and Manitoba are straight north of me. It will take 8 hrs alone to reach the border. Has anyone been to Thunder Bay?

Instead of a passport, your boyfriend could get the enhanced driver's license. I believe you need one or the other now to get in and out.
