After a conversation with a fellow walker this morning, I have to make the below statement (and I'm positive it's one I've made before).
As a note to the general public, yes, I am certain our oldest girl is a purebred German Shepherd, and no, she is not considered small. The breed standard itself calls German Shepherds a 'medium sized dogs', and at their tallest, a female should only be 60-61cm at the wither. At 58.5-59cm, she is not even on the lower end of the standard.
Likely the German Shepherd you had growing up, only seemed large because you were much younger then, or it was simply oversized.
